History

Botanical garden in Nitra was established on 1.1.1982 but an intention to build a garden with agrobotanical character has appeared earlier- in 1975. Place for the garden was found near Slovak University of Agriculture and planting could start. From 1978 a group of workers began with landscaping and growing plants. An author of the project respected university's appearance, so the garden was built in accordance with the original architecture. Another fact taken into consideration was that the garden was supposed to be built near an exhibition center- Agrokomplex, and near others scientific institutions. Over the years, the botanical garden expanded- 4 greenhouses were build and  Vivarium (where exotic reptiles are breed) was also attached to the garden. In 2002, so-called Demonstration garden, containing rich collections of fruit trees, was attached as well.

Description of the park

Botanical garden is formed by separate units- park, tree nursery, orchard, greenhouses, vivarium and office building.

Fauna and flora of the park

In garden you can find various kinds of flora from temperate zone, gathered into groups with similar features. Make sure to visit greenhouses containing rich collection of tropical and subtropical plants. You may also find ornamental and carnivorous plants, succulents and cactuses. Thanks to expeditions to Ecuador, Peru and Nicaragua, garden owns also some of precious orchids and bromeliads.

Rarity of the garden is a collection of field crops containing fruit trees, vines, vegetables and so on. The most special collections are assortments of different fruit trees.

The garden takes pride in vivarium, where different exotic animals are breed. If you find a courage, you may take a photo with a snake. Mascot of vivarium  is „Vinco“ turtle (by the way, one of the biggest turtles in the world). Crocodiles, iguanas, monitor, spiders,  snails and other lizards can be seen there.
